Ultimate Packing List for Unpredictable Melbourne (Spring and Fall)

Melbourne weather in spring is notoriously unpredictable. It’s sunny one minute, drizzly the next, hot immediately after. We generally factored in a midday wardrobe change. During transition seasons like Spring and Fall, the temperature changes are also shocking. Mornings would be mid-50s and chilly, but it would hit 100º by 2pm. Your weather app isn’t broken. You’re going to hit each step in those roller coaster temperatures in the next 12 hours.

Melbourne isn’t a crazy fancy city, but most people dressed comfortably well.

Clothing

  • 3–4 t-shirts/tops – lightweight for warmer days
  • 2 long-sleeve shirts/blouses – for layering or cooler evenings
  • 1–2 sweaters or cardigans – essential for chilly snaps
  • 1 lightweight jacket – a denim or utility jacket works great
  • 1 rain jacket or compact umbrella – surprise showers are common
  • 2 pairs of jeans or trousers
  • 1–2 pairs of shorts/skirts
  • 1-2 versatile dresses – pick some that can work for dinners or going out
  • 1 light scarf – handy for style and sudden temperature drops
  • PJs/loungewear
  • Swimsuit – our hotel had a pool, and it was a perfect midday escape when those high temps hit

Shoes

  • Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers
  • Casual shoes or flats – for going out
  • Flip flops or sandals – if you plan to hit a beach or spa

I found that very few people in Melbourne wore heels, but if you want something more elevated for evenings, I found some black leather booties did the trick.

Toiletries & Health

  • Travel-size shampoo/conditioner/body wash
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Sunscreen – the Aussie sun is no joke. You can also think about buying some there. I love Blue Lizard Australian sunscreen.
  • Moisturizer/lip balm – the air can get dry, especially if it’s windy
  • Basic meds (ibuprofen, antihistamines, motion sickness tablets, etc.)
  • Makeup/grooming items (as desired)

Tech & Essentials

  • Phone & charger
  • Travel adapter (Australia uses Type I plugs, 230V)
  • Power bank
  • Headphones
  • Camera (if not using your phone)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Daypack or tote bag (you’ll be out and about a lot. Bring something that can carry your basic needs through the day)

Extras

  • Travel insurance info
  • Credit card & some AUD cash
  • ID/passport
  • Itinerary/confirmation emails
  • Books, Kindle, or journal
  • Small umbrella – yes, it deserves a second mention

Melbourne has great shopping and cute boutiques, so if you like to shop on vacation, this would be a good trip to leave room in your suitcase.
